CRESST Summer Internship Program
The CRESST partnership is planning to select between two and eight students, on a competitive basis, to participate in summer internships at GSFC for the summer of 2008. These are nominally 10-week paid internships for graduate and undergraduate level college students attending US universities. Applicants are selected on the basis of qualifications and motivation to conduct a bone fide research-related project in conjunction with a GSFC-based Ph.D. research scientist in one of the space science disciplines. We recommend that students contact a GSFC/Astrophysics Sciences Division scientist and reach an agreement on a mutually acceptable project to undertake, prior to submitting the application. However, if no mentor or project is identified in the application, we will attempt to match applicants with appropriate GSFC scientists and projects. A current list of research projects can be found at ASD Student Opportunities, although applicants need to confirm with the mentor/contact if the opportunity is still open. For further information, contact the CRESST Program Manager.
Travel &/or Housing Requirements for Non-Local Students
Students selected for a CRESST Internship, who are not local to the Washington DC metropolitan area, depending on individual need, may request financial assistance for round trip travel expenses and also for housing accommodation during the internship period. If and when selected, contact the CRESST Program Manager immediately to apply for housing and/or travel reimbursement.
CRESST will reimburse allowable round-trip travel expenses between your home or university and College Park, MD, normally up to a maximum of $500. This does not apply to those whose permanent residence is in the DC-Baltimore area.
For those granted housing assistance, The University of Maryland at College Park provides facilities on-campus. Normally these are at New Leonardtown, a UMD dormitory facility, that offers 6-person suites, with double or single rooms (depending on availability), plus kitchen and bathroom facilities. Interns may purchase meals in cash at the University, although this is not reimbursable expense through the Program. Similarly, if you decide to drive, you may purchase a parking pass, which is $115.00 for the summer. If not, we can usually get you space on a shuttle bus going from the University campus to GSFC in the morning and back in the late afternoon. Also, there are usually other students saying on-campus and working at GSFC, with whom you can get rides.
