CRESST 2010 SUMMER INTERN HOUSING

This webpage is intended for use by CRESST Interns who have received definitive internship offers and who are in need of housing for the summer of 2010.

This internship is not able to provide a housing subsidy in addition to the stipend. So, students need to arrange for and cover the costs associated with their own housing. However, CRESST is committed to helping students find acceptable housing. As a starting point, from our experience last year, we make the following suggestions:

  1. The Courtyards is a public/private partnership between the University of Maryland at College Park and Capstone Companies. The facility is located at 8000 Boteler Lane, College Park, MD 20740. Courtyards has an active "re-leasing" program whereby students with annual leases are interested (even anxious) to lease out their unused room for the summer. Visit http://umdcourtyards.com/uc/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=31 for details. Toward the foot of this page, you'll see a "re-lease" bulletin board where you can post an "apartment needed" ad or review posts from current tenants looking to re-lease for the summer. Monthly lease rates are in the $6-700 range, but negotiations are usually possible between the summer and long-term lessees. Long-term lessees normally begin looking for re-leases beginning in April. A contact for further questions at Capstone is Earl Alexander, Leasing Manager, at 301-314-2466. (Metro Bus: R3 to Beltway Plaza, T-17 to GSFC.)
  2. A local woman with whom we have had extensive experience, Judy Hamburg, rents out rooms in her house: 7021 Storch Lane in Seabrook, MD 20706. The rates are ~ $750/month with a one month security deposit. She can be reached at 301-794-8221 or msaspjh@aol.com . (The T15-T17 bus stop, which passes by the front gate of GSFC, is a 15-20 minute walk from Judy's house.)
  3. Lakeside North on Ridge Road has 3 month leases. The cost is $995/month + 20% for electricity for the least expensive, one-bedroom unfurnished apartment. The security deposit is $200, with a $25 application fee for each student 18 years old or older.  The website is http://www.southernmanagement.com/communities/index.cfm?id=LN&b=s . (T-17 Metro Bus service is available to/from GSFC).
  4. Capitol College makes their housing facilities available to students working in the area over the summer. The campus is located at 11301 Springfield Road, Laurel, Maryland 20708. Rental rates are $175/week for singles and $150/week for double occupancy.  Details are available at:
http://www.capitol-college.edu/administrativeoffices/residencelife/summerhousinginfo/coop.shtml . (~ 6 mile distance to GSFC; private transportation required).
  5. Greenbelt Lodge offers a limited number of fully-furnished apartments for rent, with a minimum of 3 months.  Greenbelt Lodge's website is http://greenbeltlodge.com/ . (T-17 Metro Bus service is available to/from GSFC).
  6. Lastly, the University of Maryland at College Park has rental units available at Leonardtown Apartments: the weekly rate PER PERSON Single Occupancy is $301.00 + 6% sales tax; Double Occupancy: $252.00 + 6% sales tax. This includes apartment style lodging and wireless internet access. Linen packs are available for $125/person. CRESST would need to make arrangements for/with you, as they will not rent directly to individuals.  (Metro Bus service is available to GSFC, but it is not direct).

When you begin the search process, keep Ms. Peles aware of developments, and she'll make you aware of others from the Program aiming at the same facility with whom you may be able to share rooms and/or transportation. If you are having trouble finding a place, contact Ms. Peles. There are also individuals working at GSFC who may be interested to have a student "boarder" in their home for the summer.
